The Basic Process Of Making Wine

Summary: Wine has been around for thousands of years.  The process of making them is surprisingly simple but requires a lot of patience and experience in order to produce a beverage of exceptional quality that can be appreciated by many generations.

For millennia wine has been enjoyed by almost all cultures and civilizations in the world.  It is the drink used in gatherings, ceremonies, social occasions and religious rituals. Today, the allure of drinking this fine beverage has never waned.  In fact, it has evolved into a billion dollar industry.  Here is a discussion about how wines are made in general.

Wine making has changed very little over the centuries.  Surprisingly most of the basic things that occur in the creation of this beverage are natural chemical reactions.  It basically requires taking any natural yeast admixed with a sugar liquid substance and then transform it into alcohol.  Winemakers today make wines by following five basic steps.  The first step in making wine is choosing and growing the variant of grape that you will use to make the beverage.  This may seem like a no brainer but any experienced winemaker will tell you that this is the most crucial and important step in creating a beverage that can be cherished for generations or simply throw away with the week’s garbage. It all boils down to the type of grape used, the level of nurturing that has gone into growing them as well as the soil and the weather conditions in the area where it was cultivated.


It is a known fact in the winemaking world that the correct ripeness or maturity of the grape is crucial in making marvelous wines.  Harvesting is the next basic step towards making wine.  If they are harvested too early then they might not have the correct consistency needed to create a fine tasting wine. The same is true if they have been left to over ripen because all the essential flavors would have been lost and what you will have are wines that have no balance at all.

The third step in how wine is made is fermentation. When the grapes have been harvested they are stored in huge oak barrels, stainless steel containers and even concrete vats to undergo the fermenting process.  The yeast will then convert all the sugar into alcohol as well as carbon dioxide. Fermentation stops when all the sugar has been consumed.

Once the fermenting process is finished, the wine is then stored to undergo the ageing process in order to bring out the complex flavors that will result in a more rounded drink.  There are wines that need not require to be aged and are best consumed right away.  For the most part those that undergo ageing process are stored oak casks in order to enhance the flavor to its maximum.

The final step in making wine is the bottling process.  Once the desired maturity is reached, wines are now ready for bottling. Winemakers choose whether they want the finished product to undergo fining or filtering in order to remove some of the impurities that resulted from the ageing process. Once they have been bottled the wines undergo another maturing period before they are shipped and sold. This is to give the wines enough time for settling.
